- > Hi Doug,
-
- Hi Simon,
-
- > Guess what? I got an Afterburner! :)
-
- > You jammy git !!
- > Got any more spare ??? :-)
-
- Took me 6 months to get this one - never mind spare ones! :)
-
- > Thats good news, as the '040 needs to be supported openly by developers/coders which makes
- > it a better buy for normal Falcon people.
-
- Well, we had to buy it - but we got it in the end....
-
- > Do you know what the normal price is in Germany ? ... just think Neal O'nions could of sold
- > quite a few since the show and Compo and AW may still be around ...
-
- I've seen some truly horrendous prices attributed to the AB - but we managed to get this one
- trade / cost price - can't remember which. It was about L350 ex-vat. That's including the full
- 68040 chip (FPU version).
-
- Not too bad compared with the 'L600 and beyond' I've seen kicking around....
-
- > And the fitting instructions are all in German... :(
-
- > Well it makes me feel a little better ... :-)
-
- Not me - still staring at the PCB just now. :(
-
- > Do you know how the '040 chip looks ?
-
- A sort of mauve coloured ceramic block about 1.8" square and about 2mm deep with a
- serious number of pins on the back - PGA style. It's got lots of little gold-plated
- alien heiroglyphs on the top which make it look like a prop from Star-Trek.
-
- > I mean the shape of it and a rough amount of pins ... maybe all '040's are the same but
- > the 68000 came in quite a few flavours.
-
- I think most 68040's are the same - for pin-grid-array mounting. I really can't see a
- DIL version myself - not with that many pins. :)
-
- > Anyway I have an '040 chip at home and a friend has a few more (he'll give them to me if I
- > ask him!)
-
- Eh? Wish I had spoken to you first - could have saved myself about 80 quid! :I
-
- :)
-
- > The one I have is probbaly 1.5-2" square with about 170 pins (in 3 layer rows) except for
- > one corner which has a pin missing (!) I think it was designed like that ...
-
- Exactly the same as this one - what speed rating is it? Should say on the front...
-
- > Anyway do you know if they do AB040 without a CPU ? That way I could make one myself
- > pretty cheaply !
-
- Overscan don't seem to do them - but Neil was sorting out a chipless board for us before
- specialist mags sort of folded up. They are definitely around....
-
- > As the '040 is probably faster than the DSP will we see '040 enhanced CPU versions of the
- > excellent Apex tools ?
-
- There are not that many 040's about - but I'll be sure to make use of it where possible. It's
- more important to make sure base Falcons are well covered before working on add-ons for
- expensive luxuries like this.
-
- > Maybe I'll need better Simms for that kind of speed (50Mhz ram?) but we will have to see..
-
- > You may be lucky ... if you do, give me a shout as I know a friend who has a supply of legitimate
- > cheap SIMMs ...
-
- Sounds good - but I'd be even more interested in a cheap 68040 rated above 25Mhz! (the AB actually
- overclocks the 25Mhz chip to 32Mhz - with a heatsink & fan, but I imagine a 33/40 would do 50
- at a push).
-
- > BTW Are you interested in a Brand New SCSI Quantum 540 Mb hard disk ?
-
- Sorry - got HD's coming out of our ears just now! :)
-
- Cheers,
-
- Doug.
